All In A Day's Work

Remember the dominoes I purchased at Michael's..... well here they are in a clear mason jar. It's so thrilling for E when he dips his fingers in it and tries to pull out a piece...... almost lucky-dip fun!
Well, there was a purpose to all that dipping/digging - he randomly pulls one out and does addition of sets! The black line between the two sets on the domino lets him know that they are separate sets. He then writes the equation out after counting out the dots. He really enjoyed it and so kept on going till he almost cleared the jar! Way to go, mathplayer! :-)
I created another simple bingo/domino combo game for these dominoes. Made a gameboard that consisted of numbers 0 - 12 and another 0 - 24. Once again, E randomly picks, in turn with me, a piece of domino and adds up the two sets of numbers and obtains the product of the sum. He then finds this same number on his card (we each have our own) and he places a token on them. In our case, we used red cardstock dots for this purpose (borrowing from our dino. bingo game). First person with four in a row wins! Numbers on gameboard do not have to be following numerical order. Random order is fine. The 0 - 24 gameboard is for when we play by drawing two pieces at a time which means that addition of four sets of numbers take place. I purchased two boxes of dominoes so the highest possible product is 6+6+6+6=24 hence 0 - 24. Can create the same kind of gameboard for other operations if playing using other operations like x, /, -.

Next, E wanted to dip into the popsicle sticks jar and do this numeral card with popsicle sticks activity. We forgot about zero but I will do better next time.

Once done, he piled the sticks on top of each other for each card and then rubber banded them together to see the increasing height as the quantity increased.

The Thermal Tablets are simple yet very fun. E sorted them, named them, felt them for temperature - similar/dissimilar/cold/warm/room temperature. Then I separated the sets and put one set away on a rug a little distance away and he had to carry the match from the table back to the rug one by one - names them when they are matched. As an extension, he then took each material type and went around the house to identify things that are made of the same material. Luckily for him, we had things in all those materials around for him to discover.
He attempted this puzzle - looks easy but really isn't. He did well - almost gave up but persevered. He even went on to do the lion one. We have four of these kinds - lucky finds at garage sales last spring/summer.

His new fave. - modeling clay. Must admit these are not the best quality for kids because they remain quite hard even after working them with warm hands. I suppose the cold weather doesn't help either. Tried microwaving for short spurts to soften - worked O.K. Definitely low grade quality. Anyway, he likes these better than playdoh. Made fish, snake, nest with bird eggs, pond, bird in nest, tree, etc. I used to play with clay for hours upon hours as a child. Vivid memories.

Then on to CNY activities. E made his own Chinese zodiac cards. I wrote all the names except for Ox. Did you notice pig? He was the last to be drawn as he did them according to which animal came first in the lunar calendar. Well, by the time pig was to be drawn, he had grown tired of the process. :-) Must say my faves. are dragon and horse.

E making a lantern for CNY. Gave him another cherished opportunity to cut and staple.

A simple dragon from http://www.enchantedlearning.com/

And here's the finished product! The Lantern. Intend to make many more in various colors and hang them up!
Yes, all in a day's worth of activities. The beauty of following my child is that he keeps me plenty busy and NOT me keep him busy! Most importantly, he did all activities except for dragon and lantern-making with no supervision after presentation. See, that's how I have time to do MY stuff - cleaning/laundry/decluttering/blogging, etc. When an activity is completed, he'll let me know. After he was done with the lantern, he decided that he was tired and wanted to take a nap! When his energy is recharged, sometime during the evening, he'll get a second, YES, A SECOND wind and ask to do more activities, then read and journal before he retires BUT not before he loves on us first, sing his self-composed songs, tell his self-authored stories and yak, yak, yak..........till finally his eyes shut.
