Dinosauria Thursday

E has been talking about dinosaurs for at least a year if not more and this has been a constant in his life and recently he told me that he wanted to look for dinosaur fossils and eggs. So, he asks, "What am I?" to which I replied, "Palaeontologist!". "Yes, mom, I want to be a paleontologist." Well, I thought .......this would be the perfect opportunity for the start in Timeline of History lessons. And so we did ..................
This was the first thing E did - watch a DK Eyewitness video on Dinosaurs. He has watched this a lot of times and yet he never tires of it. Good for him! :-)

We talked about each kind of dinosaur - name, length, height, type of food they eat and some distinguishing features - and then E matched the specific dinosaurs to their cards.

We read this book. You can find out more about it on my other blog at http://www.barefootbooksmissouri.blogspot.com/ You will see additional lesson plan ideas on dinosaurs there too.

I have been an avid collector of National Geographic magazines - many in multiple of copies of the same issue - very useful for research, reading about in this case with excellent visuals for all and finding fantastic pics for continent work, etc. Must add that we've been receiving kind donations of magazines from friends currently and in the past. Thanks so much!

E's Brachiosaurus drawn the evening of Wednesday in great anticipation for Dinosaur-themed Thursday!

Pages to a dinosaur book E illustrated. I wrote the various names as requested by E before illustrating. I must commend him on his knowledge about dinosaurs as he drew these from memory. :-)

In addition to all these, E wrote all the first letters for each type of dinosaur he learned. (sounded them out first). Also practiced writing 'd' for dinosaur. Then he played some free dinosaurs games online at http://www.abc.net.au/dinosaurs/dino_playground/ and http://www.kidsdinos.com/dinosaur-games/dinosaur-match.php. He did also enjoy some free worksheets on dinosaur at http://www.learningpages.com/ and visited a dino virtual museum at http://www.nps.gov/dino/

I love the drawings! Children's drawings are always so interesting to me. Once, one of mine drew me and made sure to point out that she included my necklace. It's amazing the details that they remember!

Thank you! I treasure them. Gives me a chance to peek into his mind. :-)
